Chess at MTIS
Chess is a sport that has captivated the attention of people from many social strata from antiquity to present.
The main objectives are clear-set and easily attainable by school children.
This activity is perfect for children in grades first through fourth, since it develops their systematic and organizational thinking, and it has them thinking about future actions in a logical way, while eliminating them in a short period of time.
Chess combines these aspects with the development of a competitive spirit, motivation, the joy of playing, the joy of competing one on one with an adversary, and with the sweet taste of success.
The children have to:
• memorize and understand the rules and regulations of the game;
• understand the way the chessboard is arranged;
• recognize the chessmen and their place on the chessboard;
• learn the system of the chessmen movement;
• learn the way the chessmen interact;
• understand the concept of open and closed game;
• assimilate the opening moves for each type of game;
• learn to memorize the end of games, for example: check, checkmate, draw etc.;
• learn easy endings such as: two knights, a queen, a rook and a knight, a rook etc.
The results achieved from these objectives stand to testify to the good choice the parents and the MTIS staff have made in picking chess as an extracurricular activity.
